The Core 4

UCLA’s Office of Residential Life focuses on four main areas which we call the Core 4. These are the activities we feel will provide our residents with the most benefit and keep us focused on achieving our mission.

Support the Academic Mission

As a student-centered department within the residential community, ORL is in a unique position to support university strategies to carry out the academic mission. We provide space for classes, programs, and services that enhance and support students’ academic success. We partner with academic departments to deliver programs and resources to residents. We facilitate faculty involvement in the residential community, offer programs that strengthen academic preparation, and design environments that promote interactive intellectual exchange.

Create Safe Environments

We consider physical and emotional safety foundational to a productive living-learning environment for all those who live and work in the residential community. We maintain an active and responsive presence within our buildings and provide programs that educate residents about individual and community safety. We develop intentional relationships with students, staff, faculty, and parents based on respectful and supportive interactions. We work to enhance the emotional well-being of our community members and to ensure that all members of our diverse community feel included and valued.

Promote Responsible Citizenship

We promote responsible citizenship so that students learn to be responsible for themselves and respectful of their communities. We advise student governing boards, promote community standards, and enforce University and On-Campus Housing policies. We identify and facilitate community engagement opportunities, partnerships with academic and campus departments, and educational programs that emphasize community involvement, promote volunteerism, encourage activism, and support students as agents of change. We also provide educational opportunities through judicial interactions that encourage students to evaluate their own actions, provide education about decision making, and give students the tools and skills to improve their choices in the future.

Foster Student Development Within Residential Community

We believe education encompasses opportunities for learning, personal development, and critical thought both in and out of the classroom. We encourage students to develop their "whole" person by engaging them in their own learning process. We offer programs and services that encourage students to explore their identity development, individual growth, values, and critical thinking skills while helping them create an understanding and appreciation for the greater community.
