Academics in the Commons

To bring academic support to the residential community, the Office of Residential Life has partnered with the Division of Undergraduate Education to house Academics in the Commons (AITC) on the 2nd Floor of Covel Commons. The programs offered by AITC encompass peer learning assistance, workshops, peer advising, peer mentoring and other resources to help students develop their academic skills, gain an awareness of campus resources, and expand their knowledge of self-so that personal and academic success at UCLA is within reach for all of our residents.

The programs below are located in Covel Commons and are open to all UCLA undergraduate students.

Academic Workshops

Academics in the Commons (AITC) offers a variety of workshops including: Academic Focus and Success Skills, Planning for the Future, and Personal Growth issues. Covel Math/Science Lab

The Math/Science Lab offers weekly group learning assistance (tutoring) for selected introductory courses in chemistry, life sciences, mathematics, and physics. In this informal setting, students can ask questions, test their mastery of concepts and improve their problem solving skills, learning methods, and study strategies. Our current course offerings are listed below:

Chemistry 14A, 14B, 14C, 14D, 20A, 20B, 30A, 30B, 153A
Life Sciences 1, 2, 3, 4
Mathematics 3A, 3B, 3C, 31A, 31B, 32A
Physics 1A, 1B, 6A, 6B

To enroll in a peer learning session, students must register in person at Covel Commons during the 1st week of instruction. Exact registration times are announced in the classes being offered each quarter, but they are generally held from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Covel Commons 230 on the following days:

Fall Quarter: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
Winter Quarter: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Spring Quarter: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

In addition to weekly sessions, brief, limited drop-in assistance is available Monday - Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in 115 Rieber Hall.

Peer Advising/Mentoring
