Classes on the Hill

Classes held in On-Campus Housing are unique because they offer a more intimate atmosphere, more individualized attention, and are attended primarily by On-Campus Housing residents. These classes also link to programming and activities right where you live, including review sessions, study groups, socials, and group outings.

GE Clusters

The First-Year General Education (GE) Clusters are yearlong, team taught, interdisciplinary courses available only to entering freshmen students. Several of these courses will be taught in the new learning and teaching Auditorium in De Neve Plaza as well as Covel Commons. The Clusters offer first year students the opportunity to study complex topics in depth, with smaller class sizes and personal access to some of UCLA’s most prestigious faculty members. Clusters are year-long, collaboratively taught, interdisciplinary courses that are focused on a topic of timely importance such as the “global environment,” or “interracial dynamics.” These courses are taught by some of the university’s most distinguished faculty and seasoned graduate students and are open only to entering freshmen. They are designed to strengthen the intellectual skills of entering freshmen, introduce them to faculty research work, and expose them to “best practices” in teaching, such as seminars and interdisciplinary study.

Fiat Lux Seminars

Fiat Lux is a collection of one-unit seminars spanning the rich variety of disciplines at UCLA. Several of these seminars are taught by Faculty-in-Residence and some are held in the Residential area. In these sessions, lower division students can not only explore topics of intellectual importance, but can participate in critical discussions of these topics with a group of peers and faculty. Designed primarily for first-year students, these seminars offer students the opportunity to pursue specific interests in a small group setting with individual faculty attention. Although listed under the Honors program, all students are invited to participate.
