Tutoring, Workshops and Academic Counseling
To bring academic support to the residential community, the College and the Office of Residential Life have partnered to provide Academics in the Commons. This program encompasses tutorials, workshops, counseling, and other resources to help students develop academic skills, an awareness of campus resources, and a knowledge of self—so that personal and academic success at UCLA is within reach of all of our residents.
The programs below are located in Covel Commons and are open to all students.
Academics in the Commons
College Composition
Composition tutors can help students at any stage of the writing process, from generating and organizing ideas to polishing final drafts. All tutorials are provided free of charge.
ESL Tutorials
ESL tutors assist non-native speaking students with English grammar, pronunciation, listening comprehension, conversation and composition. For individual appointments, call (310) 206-1491. Composition tutors also offer evening drop-in tutoring. All tutorials are provided free of charge.
College Math/Science Tutorials
Tutoring is available for selected introductory courses in mathematics, physics, life sciences, and chemistry. For weekly small group tutorials, you must register in person during the first full week of the quarter at Covel Commons. Sign up times are announced in the classes tutored. Drop-in tutorials are also available Monday through Thursday. The subject schedule is posted in the lab.
Counseling and Support
Academic Counseling at the College
How do I improve my grades? What should I major in? What requirements do I need to fulfill to get my degree? How do I drop or add a class? What classes should I take next quarter (or during the summer)? How do I petition to take extra units? I'm not in good academic standing—what do I do?? Coming to Covel Commons can help you avoid standing in line in Murphy Hall while waiting to see a counselor. Academic Counseling is available in 203 Covel Commons throughout the school year.
Peer Advising Network
Improve your chances for academic success as a result of regular meetings with a peer advisor who will help you make a better adjustment to UCLA. Get help in planning your future academic programs and in choosing your major.
Academic Workshops
The College of Letters and Science and the Career Center offer a variety of workshops on Academic Focus and Success Skills, Planning for the Future, and Personal Growth issues. Surf over to the academic workshop site for more detailed information, or call (310) 825-9315. Workshops are provided free of charge.
