The Department

The mission of the Office of Residence Life (ORL) is to create safe, supportive and inclusive living-learning communities that engage residents in order to foster their academic success, personal growth, and responsible citizenship. ORL works in partnership with the office of Housing and Hospitality Services to deliver comprehensive residential services to 9500 students in 14 residential facilities.

The Position

The Assistant Director will provide vision, leadership and motivation within the department under the direction of the Associate Director of Residential Education. Responsibilities include: general administration and supervision of the student development programs for 9500 students in multiple facilities; supervision of 4-5 professional Residence Hall Directors; advising for multiple student or staff groups; representing the Department on University committees and task groups; monitoring staff and committee budgets and expenditures. Oversees departmental safety and security programs. This position serves as departmental emergency and duty coordinator; provides “on-call” duty back up coverage year round. This is a live-on position.

Qualifications

Skill in supervising staff and other supervisors to maximize effective performance and stimulate growth and expertise in their positions. Ability to organize information, people, finances, and other resources to develop or maximize effective procedures and operational systems.

Ability to guide and direct actions of others including staff and student residents. Ability to speak formally and informally by making prepared and extemporaneous presentations to individuals and groups in order to provide information, explain procedures, investigate facts, and persuade others.

Skill in writing, data analysis and evaluation. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with department staff, campus personnel, community persons, and students to produce quality group work. Working knowledge of federal and state laws and campus housing regulations. Detailed knowledge of programming concepts and programming procedures applicable in college student housing.

Working knowledge of safety procedures and equipment to direct the response of others during an emergency. Experience in emergency and disaster response a plus.

Preferred Experience

Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Social Psychology, Education, or a related field, and 4-6 years of full-time experience in residence hall administration and supervision.

Salary / Benefits

The salary range for the SAO IV position at UCLA is $4187.00-$7539.00 per month. An on campus apartment plus full meal plan is provided.
