Theme Communities

  1. Description
  2. Apply

The Office of Residential Life proudly introduces four new themed communities to Dykstra Hall and Sproul Hall for the 2008-2009 academic year:

  1. African Diaspora Studies Theme
  2. Chican@/Latin@ Studies Theme
  3. Green/Sustainability Theme
  4. Health Sciences Theme

Through Theme Communities, students with similar interests can live together and participate in specially designed programs that cater to their academic and social interests. Each theme is partnered by an academic department and Faculty member. Residents living in theme communities also have an opportunity to enroll in Fiat-Lux Seminar courses with their peers, enjoying the benefits of being part of an integrated community that shares scholarly interests.

Theme residents have the chance to contribute to the greater Los Angeles area through Leadership Activities and Community Service programs. Each theme community is affiliated with a number of students groups on campus, giving residents the opportunity to interact and engage in additional activities that enhance their overall experience. Students will be part of a living and learning community that fosters student development, supports academic success, promotes responsible citizenship, and creates safe environments that spark their interests and leave a lasting impact in their experience at UCLA.

African Diaspora Studies Theme

The African Diaspora Studies Theme Program provides residents and interested community members with the opportunity to discuss specific issues relating to African American history, culture and community. It promotes social and political awareness among students and provides information about resources within the African American community. The African Diaspora Studies Theme will be on the 2nd floor of Dykstra Hall.

Green/Sustainability Theme

The Green Sustainability Theme Program provides a living and learning environment for students interested in sustainability and environmental justice. The goal of the program is to bring students and faculty together in a variety of structured and informal ways to explore issues such as global environmental change, policy and management of natural resources, sustainable rural and urban environments, and environmental leadership. The program provides students and faculty with a forum to exchange ideas, challenge each other’s thinking, and share experiences about a variety of topics in small group settings. The Green/Sustainability Theme will be on the 2 North floor of Sproul Hall.

Health Sciences Theme

The Health Sciences Theme Program (HSTP) will provide a unique living and learning environment for students with specific interests in careers in medicine, human health, psychology, and/or biological sciences (e.g., physiology, neuroscience, etc). Through participation in the HSTP, students will expand their awareness and understanding of all aspects of human health and learn the skills necessary to succeed as an undergraduate science major at UCLA. The goal of the HSTP is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment for its students. By socializing with others in their prospective fields, students can forge friendships and build supportive networks that can last long after graduation. By exposure to faculty in these fields and topic matter relevant to human health, students who live in the HSTP community are likely to benefit from an expanded and enriched academic experience at UCLA. The Health Sciences Community will be on the 4th floor of Dykstra Hall.
