Chican@/Latin@ Studies Theme
Our vision on the Chican@/Latin@ Theme Community is to educate, offer insight, and of course have an enjoyable time exploring all that is associated with the customs and culture of the Chican@/Latin@ community. We hope to develop the tradition of strengthening understanding of issues & events students may know of through active participation in programs. Residents in the Chican@/Latin@ Theme Community also participate in community projects such as visiting and supporting Homegirl Cafe in Los Angeles, where female ex-convicts can find job opportunities that provide a steady income, thereby easing the transition back into their communities. In the past we have learned about widely celebrated holidays such as Dia De Los Muertos where the Latin@ community pays homage to their dead loved ones, explore political issues such as immigration through the showing of films such as "El Norte" and panel discussions with students and professors who are interested in sharing their stories, and partner with student groups such as Groupo Folklorico to show the beautiful traditional dances of Mexico.
